RETAIL PROJECT ONE

Lion Brand Yarn Studio

This studio space on East 15th street in NYC is a place where you can "experiment, learn and get inspired by color, design, texture and fiber." Knowing this credo allowed us to create a fantastic space using lots of interesting materials. Bamboo flooring, Kirei board (pressed sorghum plant panels), partially recycled polycarbonate cubbies and vintage furniture are some of the many "green" elements used in this space. We also allowed our favorite artists and designers to influence us; Dan Flavin style fluorescent tube lights make the polycarbonate panel cubbies glow from behind, Harry Bertoia's "Sonambient" sculpture influenced the LB 1878 yarn display, and George Nelson's "Marshmallow" sofa inspired the modular brightly colored ottomans. The end result is a playful studio/store where the customer can learn about knitting and get inspired by the product. We often used the phrase "yarn as art" while we designed, and I think it shows.
