Designer's Own Kitchen

Our house in Beacon, NY had been abandoned and forgotten when we bought it (for more on this, see Inspired House article in press section). While I'm a huge fan of modern design, a more traditional kitchen seemed appropriate for an 1830s farmhouse. Switching the kitchen from its former smaller space into the larger family room seemed like smart 21st century living. Using honed and waxed Carerra marble and hand painted cabinets with antique glass inserts and old flour bin style handles also seemed smart and appropriate. The paint is easy to wipe down, the honed marble naturally blemishes and patinas which is aligned with my belief in honesty of materials. Clever uses of dead space and a U-shaped layout help make this kitchen incredibly utilitarian as well.
